Government Warns of Ransomware Targeting Healthcare Facilities

November 2, 2020

Multiple government agencies have issued a cybersecurity advisory detailing a ransomware that is targeting hospitals and healthcare facilities.   The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Department of Health and Human Services warned that they have “credible information of an increased and imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and healthcare providers” with a type of ransomware called Ryuk.   If healthcare providers are infected with the ransomware, cybercriminals can scramble the organization’s data or threaten to release confidential files until the victim pays a ransom. According to the Associated Press, at least five U.S. hospitals have already been impacted this week.   To help protect yourself and your organization from cyber threats, make sure you only download files and open emails from trusted sources, and always download and install security updates from Microsoft. Also, having a Managed Service Provider like FIT Technologies in your corner can give you an extra layer of security and data protection.   To read more about the technical details of the government’s security advisory, click here.
