How to Improve Cybersecurity: 5 Quick and Easy Steps

September 10, 2024

Does your organization need to improve its cybersecurity strategy, but has no idea where to start? Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to cybersecurity. Protecting your data requires a strategic, layered approach, tailored to your needs. And with cyber-attacks increasing yearly, it’s necessary to have a structured plan in place.

In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month coming up in October, here are a few essential cybersecurity tips that you can implement right now.

Activate Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) adds a layer of protection beyond just a username and password. It adds an extra security step, such as a one-time passcode sent via text message or  app, to keep your accounts safe. This means your accounts stay secure, even if someone gets ahold of your username or password.

Team members should consider using MFA  for more than just work accounts. If a hacker can impersonate you without additional security, they can easily access your personal information. All social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter should utilize MFA as an extra layer of security.

Use a Password Manager

As organizations expand their online accounts, managing multiple passwords can easily become overwhelming. Reusing passwords across different accounts can lead to significant vulnerabilities if one is compromised.A password manager such as LastPass securely stores all your credentials, allowing easy access while maintaining strict security standards.

The FIT Technologies team can help you deploy password managers that align with your needs, so all sensitive information is managed securely and efficiently.

Be Cautious with Links and Attachments

Phishing attacks are a common threat to your organization’s security. Instead of clicking on links  from emails or messages, take a moment to directly access the drive or social media account. While platforms like Microsoft 365 have security features that scan for unsafe links and attachments, adopting a cautious, layered approach can prevent many security breaches. Take a breath and always verify any links before clicking, especially if it comes from an unknown source.

Validate Unusual Requests

When you receive an important or urgent request via text or email, take a moment to validate the information. For example, if your supervisor asks you to purchase  gift cards and send them the codes, speak with them directly. This will help improve any possible miscommunication and avoid scams.

Secure Your Devices

The fanciest security software and technology in the world will be easily overcome if you overlook the basics. Don’t leave your laptops, phones, or other devices unlocked where others can access them. Make sure your devices require a password when coming back from a lock screen, screensaver or sleep mode.

Another good rule of thumb is to not leave a device in a place where you wouldn’t leave a credit card. If you wouldn’t leave a credit card sitting at a coffee shop table, don’t leave your device either.
